At Hewes Quarter Horses our foals are extremely important to us, not only are they a representation of our breeding program, but also our future. We spend a great deal of time each year selecting the stallion each mare will breed to. Serious consideration is given to genetics, however we also weigh individual assets and weaknesses and how these will complement or hinder one another. There is nothing more satisfying for a breeder than finding that perfect niche and that is our ultimate goal for each and every one of our broodmares here at Hewes Quarter Horses. We take personal pride in producing and raising these foals and want each one to be the best possible representation of its breeding.
Our foals are generally born from mid-April through mid-June. The mares foal naturally in the pasture and the foals remain on pasture with their mothers until weaning. They learn what life is all about out there. They experience the elements, various terrains, drink out of a creek, and learn what a fence is. We prefer to wean the foals between 5-6 months of age. At weaning the foals are wormed and introduced to a light grain ration. They also have free choice hay and mineral provided to them. Around mid-fall we begin our halter breaking process, where each weanling is handled, taught to lead and stand tied. At the end of kindergarten the weanlings get their feet trimmed and are wormed. In the spring they are vaccinated and wormed again. Three weeks later they are branded and receive their booster shots. We then separate the studs and fillies and turn them out on pasture to mature and blossom during the summer.
Our 2007 foals will be online soon.
